The Kona Coffee Story
![]() Coffee Cherries |
Kona coffee was brought to Hawaii from Rio de Janeiro in 1825 by the Hawaiian chief Boki who was the Governor of Oahu. Chief Boki was returning to Hawaii on the british war ship H.M.S. Blonde with the bodies of King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu who had died in London from measles during a state visit. The beans were brought to the Kona coast in 1828 by Reverend Samuel Ruggles. The environmental components of elevation, rich volcanic soil and the afternoon cloud cover produced the superior flavor which captivated the mariners of the trading ships and whalers that visited the Hawaiian Islands. In 1860 the whaling industry collapsed and Kona coffee faded into the background creating the small Estate farms that exist today. With the improved cultivation methods, access to the new agriculture products and available assistance, Kona Coffee is still hand picked, and grown with the love and pride it deserves.
